With a roster of new heritage players, Peter Cklamovski's team spent the first half attempting to get on the same page and struggling to create cracks in Vietnam's defence.
Their energetic approach almost resulted in a goal in the 35th minute, when Dion Cools sent a blazing shot from beyond the penalty box that struck the right goalpost.
Fellow heritage player Rodrigo Holgado kept the momentum going by scoring from within the penalty box 10 minutes later, and the Malaysians, realising that the game had changed in their favour, continued to press their opponents and were rewarded with a 67th-minute goal by Corbin Ong.
Finally, Cools made up for his failed shot in the first half with a header in the 89th minute, finishing an incredible effort by the squad.
