This fall 2023 anime, Freiren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Freiren) that made by Studio Madhouse, same studio made like Death Note. It has 28-episode total and aired from Sept 2023 to March 2024.
Synopsis follows Freiren, an elf mage who outlives her human friends after defeat Demon King. Years later, she regrets not understanding them better. She sets a journey to learn humans, emotions.
Story begins after Freiren is an elf who lives for thousands of years, human lives feel very short to her. The story explores how she deals with loneliness and regrets. Grief and Acceptance comes where after her old friends pass away; she honours their memories. Although powerful, Freiren starts emotionally distant. Her journey is about slowly learning to connect others and understand feelings. This anime also leave legacy and memories shows how the smallest moments and relationships can leave lasting impacts, even after people are gone. Story Progression goes when Freiren and her party beat Demon King and say goodbye and promises to visit in 50 years. In addition, about Himmel death, she comes back in her human friend age and Himmel dies. Freiren regrets not knowing him better. Freiren travels again to learn more about humans and emotions. Suddenly, Fern (a young male) joins her and later, Stark joins too. In Magic Exam Arc, Freiren takes a tough magic exam to continue her journey. Goal is she wants to reach a place where she can meet Himmel’s soul one last time.
When it comes to Character Development, at first Freiren is cold and distant because she’s an elf who lives for thousand of years, so human’s lives feel too short to her. When her old friend Himmel dies, she regrets not getting closer to him. She goes on a new journey with Fern and Stark and learns to care about people. Over time, Freiren becomes more emotional, smiles more, and values her friendships.
About its animation and art style quality, it very high quality, even for regular scenes not just the action parts during fights. Furthermore, Detailed expressions on character small emotional changes are shown carefully. Meanwhile on art style, Soft and detailed background lots of beautiful landscapes and Magic effects look elegant and mystical, not flashy. Overall, look like a high budget movie every episode and perfectly matches calm, emotional tone of story.
Freiren anime voice acting staying on tune with sound of anime, voice acting is also superb, with actors ironically busy a lot to life to often-monotone voice of characters. Also, monotone style speaking creates lot humours situations, as do few moments when character break out into explosions and expression, mostly seen with Stark.
Immediately, about pace and engagement I think storyline is easy to understand because its not to fast and not that boring. Furthermore, storyline easy to understand. So many battles take place in single panels, yet anime adapts fully fledged and meaningful flights.
Other than that, with a moment as sample as Freiren jumping out of bed being unbelievably detailed and Fern’s birthday and Apple Pie scene, who has been so serious and reserved, smiles brightly when Freiren takes her. Again, such small but heartfelt gesture shows growing bad.
In my honest opinion, this adaptation is so good it even removed some of my criticisms of manga it felt like some story line overstayed their welcome, yet their flawless nature this adaptation made seem flew so well together.
In conclusion, if anime keeps up this level quality, could among best anime all time. Not only that, it even argues this first season one best of all all in Freiren anime and now gold standard of anime adaptations, for me.
